How HTML entities work
An HTML entity writes a character as an ampersand, a name, and a semicolon: → is →, © is ©, and — is —. Names are easier to read in source code than numbers.
The HTML Standard defines a fixed list of 2,125 names covering 1,511 characters, so most symbols have no entity. This table shows the 772 HotSymbol symbols that do. Where a character has several names, the table shows the shortest lowercase one. For any other character, use its HTML code, which every character has.
Rules that matter
- Names are case-sensitive.
→is → but↠is ↠. - End with a semicolon. A few old names work without one for compatibility, but the semicolon is always correct.
- XML is stricter. XHTML, SVG, and RSS understand only five named entities. Use numeric references there.
Characters you must escape
Some characters have special meaning in HTML markup. Escape them when you want them to appear as text:
| Character | Entity | Escape when |
|---|---|---|
| & | & | Anywhere it could start a reference |
| < | < | In text, so it is not read as a tag |
| > | > | Optional in text; common for symmetry |
| " | " | Inside double-quoted attribute values |
| ' | ' | Inside single-quoted attribute values |
Questions about HTML entities
Are HTML entity names case-sensitive?
Yes. → and ↠ are different characters, and © works only because the standard lists it separately.
Does every symbol have an HTML entity?
No. Only 1,511 characters have a name. Every character has a numeric reference such as →, so use that when no entity exists.
Should I use an entity, an HTML code, or the character itself?
In a UTF-8 page, the character itself is simplest. Use an entity for readability with common symbols such as ©, and an HTML code for everything else or for XML output.
Why does matter?
is a non-breaking space: it looks like a space but stops a line break. It is invisible, which is exactly why writing it as an entity is clearer than pasting it.
