How HTML codes work
An HTML code is a decimal numeric character reference: an ampersand, a hash, the character’s code point in decimal, and a semicolon. → is the code point U+2192, the rightwards arrow.
Every Unicode character has one, unlike named HTML entities, which exist for about 1,500 characters. The hexadecimal form, →, is equivalent.
When to use an HTML code
If your page is saved as UTF-8, which is the default for new HTML, you can paste the symbol straight into the source. HTML codes are the better choice when:
- a template, CMS, or email tool may change or strip non-ASCII characters;
- the character is invisible or easy to confuse, such as a non-breaking space or a minus sign;
- you want the source to show exactly which character is used.

Questions about HTML codes
Do I need HTML codes if my page is UTF-8?
No. A UTF-8 page can contain the symbol directly. HTML codes remain useful for invisible or look-alike characters and for tools that mishandle non-ASCII text.
What is the difference between → and →?
Nothing in the result. Both produce →. The first writes the code point in decimal, the second in hexadecimal with an x.
Why does my HTML code show as text instead of a symbol?
The ampersand has probably been escaped as &, often by a CMS or editor, or the semicolon is missing. Check the page source and enter the code in the HTML view rather than the visual editor.
Do HTML codes work in XML and SVG?
Yes. Numeric references are part of XML, so they work in XHTML, SVG, and RSS. Named HTML entities other than the five XML built-ins do not.
